YA Buccaneers Spring Bootcamp Monday #2

I’m participating in YA Buccaneers Spring Bootcamp! Did you miss my first Monday post? Here it is in case you need to catch up (it’s short, folks. It’s not one of my doozies.) I’ve been assigned to Team Six for Accountability (MOAR WRITING TEAMS! Yes. More please. I like people yelling at me to write. Like they should be right now!)

Monday #2!

1. I am not going to finish magicballoonbook revisions within that time frame and it was kind of silly to think I could. I was pushing myself to be ready for a contest that MBB is just NOT going to be ready for. This is not my first go around with this book. I started in February 17th, 2013 and finished the first draft in July after stopping to go back and revise once. It’s one of my favorite ideas and contains some of my favorite characters, but it’s a HARD book. Emotionally, plot twisty, and setting wise. This time around, I added not one but TWO points of view plus an entirely different time period. So to do this right, I told myself I could let this contest go. There’d be more. Or I could query traditionally. Either way, Pitch Madness wasn’t the be all and end all. I’m still revising like mad. I revised about 20k in the last week plus added about 7,000 new words, so it’s been a productive week nonetheless!

2. When MBB revisions are done, I wanted to outline and write 25k on Five of Hearts. Obviously MBB revisions aren’t done yet so not so much here.

3. Querying. Obviously that’s farther off in the distance.

Over the next week, I want to revise another 20k of MBB (if you’re wondering, yes, this is a very long book. It’s about 90k in first draft and I don’t expect that to change much in revisions). Unfortunately, the next set of revisions is almost all rewrites, so that’s kind of brutal. mostly like first drafting again but this time I have an outline (WOOHOO PLANNING IS AMAZING) and people to keep kicking me along.

How’d you do, friends?

  1. Hi, Katherine!
Wow, you’re tackling a lot here in the next few months. I sympathize with your mad revision scramble–although it looks like you’re much further along than I am. The first novel I queried was also a ‘hard book,’ and I went around in circles on it so. many. times. 🙂

I love the ideas behind both your current projects, so keep up the good work!
